Craig David is “grateful” for both old and new fans as he embarks on next chapter of his career

ABC RadioCraig David‘s hit debut album Born to Do It rocketed the British R&B singer to stardom in the U.K. and U.S. in 2000.

Seventeen years later, the Grammy-nominated artist plans to release his seventh album in January.

He tells ABC Radio that while he’s “grateful for every fan who’s been with me since day one,” he’s also embraced a whole new generation of fans.

“I look back at those moments when it started with Born to Do It all the way up to present day with the new album and the craziest thing is, I’ve seen a whole new generation who only just discovered me, probably from the last album I released.”

“But, a lot of people will just hear the brand-new song with [British indie rock band] Bastille, [“I Know You”], and that will be the first song they’ve ever heard from me.”

While reflecting on new fans who are just getting to know his music, Craig says, “They’re discovering it themselves and I think that that for me has probably been the most exciting thing because I had to lean into the unknown to become relevant to a younger generation.”

He adds, “If you just tell them, ‘Oh, I’ve sold millions of records and I’ve had loads of number ones,’ it doesn’t mean anything.”

Craig David’s new album, The Time Is Now, comes out January 26.
